Binding is a Shanir power by which Highborn attatch others to their service. Principally used by lords to assure the fealty of their Kendar, some Shanir can bond with animals. The most powerful bonds are those mage by exchange of blood by a Shanir so gifted. All lords must perforce be binders of some measure to function as such, although most are ignorant that the psychic bond more typically employed between a Highborn and Kendar is a Shanir trait.[1]

Within the nine Great Houses, each lord is supported by other Highborn of his House who can add their numbers of bound Kendar to his. Women are not supposed to bind others although some, notably Rawneth, flout this custom more or less openly.

What they don't seem to have realized is that even that bond can only be made by a Highborn with at least some trace of the Old Blood—in other words, by a Shanir.' "
