[H]is gargoyle never came home. You know, one of those little stone beasties. Every master architect has one, and very useful they are, but impish too. Look the other way and you'll either find them gone or sitting on your head. They also guard their master's crypt.

A gargoyle in Tai-tastigon may either refer to the kind familiar on Earth, decorative parts of the drainwork of a roof on a building, or to the companion creature of a master architect. Every master architect has one, and they perform useful tasks for him, but they are "impish", as one architect tells Jame. When the architect dies the gargoyle guards their crypt.[1]

Gargoyles cannot move when someone is looking at them.
