The upper keep was relatively new in construction and regular in design, built of ironwood and oak. Below it, however, the cave-riddled cliff had long ago been hollowed out and filled with a wooden maze in which all the rooms seemed to be on different levels with ceilings of different heights. Erratic steps connected them, and halls that moved by fits and starts; […] Below were the quarters and studies where most of Mount Alban's scholars lived. – Jame's narration, Seeker's Mask, "Part V: Mount Alban", II
Mount Alban was originally an ancient Hathiri fortress, which like all the keeps, was itself built on the site of an even older Merikit hill fort.
Mount Alban is built into the cliff. Parts of the college are wooden, and other parts are in the cliff's caves. The college is maze-like, with numerous stairs.
