From a rise, she saw the squat tower of the keep, dark against the Barrier except where the crystal dome over the lord's solar caught the evening light. The sun was going down to the west; to the east, a gibbous moon slowly climbed the sky. A fitful, sour wind from the north ruffled her hair and combed the grass over her toes.
– Jame's narration, Blood and Ivory: A Tapestry, "Among the Dead"
North Kenshold is a keep in the far north, deep within the Haunted Lands and very near the Barrier and Perimal Darkling. It was abandoned. Three centuries later, Ganth settled in it in exile after, the disaster of the Battle of the White Hills and his abandonment of his seat and titles. His children, born and raised there, only ever refer to it as the Keep, even as adults.
The Keep was surrounded by a ditch, which a stone bridge over it, and a gatehouse at the bridge's base. The Keep was built around a circular courtyard with offices, a forge, armory, kitchen, granary, bakehouse, privy, and the garrison's barracks coming off it it. The Keep had a circular death-banner hall, hung with the death-banners of the original inhabitants. Jame and Tori had a favorite hiding place beneath one of the staircases. The keep a a solar for the lord, with a crystal dome. In Ganth's time, it was his bedchamber.
↑God Stalk, Book II: Crown of Nights, "Chapter 8: Voices of the Past" — " 'I came down out of the Haunted Lands, from a keep near the Barrier.' Marc regarded her with amazement. 'But the only thing up there is North Kenshold, and that was abandoned nearly three centuries ago.' It was Jame's turn to look confused. 'Do you mean to say that my people weren't the original settlers?' "
↑Dark of the Moon, "Chapter 10: The Lurking Past" — "Here was the stone bridge that spanned the encircling ditch, here the main gate, hanging askew. Beyond the gatehouse lay the courtyard, surrounded by the stone barracks, granary, and other domestic offices, tight against the outer wall with the battlements running along their roofs. Ahead rose the squat tower keep."
↑Blood and Ivory: A Tapestry, "Among the Dead" — "Jame trotted across the stone bridge, through the gatehouse, into the keep's circular courtyard. […] Small, stone chambers lined the courtyard, their backs to the outer wall. Some were domestic offices—a forge, an armory, a kitchen full of raw, wilting vegetables, a bakehouse, its oven days cold, a privy… […] Then there were the garrison's barracks."
↑Blood and Ivory: A Tapestry, "Among the Dead" — "She began to wander about the circular hall, absently gnawing on her fingertips […] She paused in front of the worn death banner where the man with the warty nose […] Her family must have lived here forever, although, oddly, none of the worn, woven faces in the hall had looked anything like Father, Mother, or anyone else she had ever known."
↑God Stalk, Book I: Tatters of Dusk, "Chapter 1: Out of the Haunted Lands" — "It seemed to her that she was back in the keep, a child again […] There was a space beneath a certain staircase, a favorite hiding place, and she was not looking for something but someone."
↑Blood and Ivory: A Tapestry, "Among the Dead" — "the master chamber under the cracked, crystal dome, where her parents had lived in the brief time they had been together. […] Tapestries lined the windowless walls."
